Race Reporter: Paul Wynn
Summer is now in full swing here in Florida and that means only one thing, brutal weather conditions. The Farmer’s crew did a fantastic job preparing the track with no help from Mother Nature. Wednesday night brought in heavy rains leaving the track under water on Thursday, but by Friday practice was underway with great track conditions.
Saturday qualifying got underway with the track grooving up very quickly and catching many off guard. It’s very common in Florida to start out with soft compound tires in the first round, but this proved to make things very difficult as everyone had very twitchy cars. By the second round many made the switch over to harder compound tires and laid down some blistering times.
1/8th Buggy Qualifying – JConcepts team driver JP Tirronen took control of the field in Pro Buggy and reset Billy Easton’s first round TQ by 5 seconds. Sportsman buggy saw Robby Mena recover from a horrific 1st round crash (twisted chassis) to take the TQ spot away from Matt Allen in round two.
1/8th Truggy Qualifying – JConcepts team driver Nathan Wincek stole the show in Pro Truggy by taking the TQ spot over Steve Szykulski. Sportsman Truggy qualifying was only separated by .08 of a second with Jconcepts driver Josh Talmadge taking the TQ honors.
1/10th Gas Truck – JConcepts team driver Nick Angelides dominated qualifying and took the TQ spot by an incredible 9+ seconds over the rest of the field.
Monster Truck – Mike Brotherton was the class of the field and TQ’d by an entire lap!
Once again Mother Nature put her stamp on the event by dropping heavy rains and strong winds Saturday night. Several tents were destroyed along with a smashed windshield. Sunday morning Farmer’s Track Crew went to work on the saturated track and several hours later we had a track again; great job guys!
1/8th Buggy Mains – Pro Buggy had Billy Easton and Nick Angelides getting off to a great start and quickly moved into 1st and 2nd. Nick showed great pace and kept Billy within striking distance through out the first half of the race. Billy ran into trouble and Nick took full advantage and never looked back cruising to the easy victory over Ryan Eckert. Sportsman Buggy saw Josh Talmadge recover from some bad luck in qualifying to take the early lead from TQ man Robby Mena. Josh was a man on a mission and steadily pulled away lapping the field by two laps, but with 1 minute to go bad luck struck again! With 2 laps to go Josh’s engine blew up and the car coasted across the start/finish line for his 40th lap, but with the 2 lap cushion Josh held on to a well deserved win.
1/8th Truggy Mains – Unfortunately bad weather was once again rolling in; so I missed the truggy mains while packing up camp franticly. Pro Truggy was all about JConcepts team driver “Bones” aka Tony Pattishall. Tony held off a late charge from Ryan Eckert, JR Mitch, and the mighty powerful Mother Nature who ended the race 4 minutes early. Sportsman Truggy saw TQ man Josh Talmadge run into some more bad luck. Chris Meloche took full advantage and went on to win the main by a lap over Billy England.
1/10 Gas Truck & Monster Truck – Both classes were rained out and final positions were given by qualifying results.
