#WBW – 2015 JConcepts Stock Nationals – Paul Wynn

Paul Wynn shares a memory of the 2015 JConcepts Stock Nationals for this #WaybackWednesday…

“The 2015 JConcepts Stock Nationals was pretty special in several aspects. One was getting to travel with some of the young stock talent from Florida for their first west coast trip (AJ Marasco and Riker Gatenby). But the icing on the cake was getting to work with Brian Kinwald as he worked and mentored Spencer Rivkin.⠀

This is a pretty unique race as it’s really geared towards fun first, with competition being second. They don’t open the doors until late morning giving you time to sleep in or get up early and go out for a nice sit-down breakfast at the beach. The race program is run like clockwork giving you plenty of time to wrench, hangout with friends, and even get away from the track for some fresh SoCal air. ⠀

It was really cool getting to see Kinwald interact with the JC/AE drivers under the tent. He was prepping tires and constantly making setup suggestions throughout the event. One moment in particular that I will never forget was when BK suggested Spencer try a Gear-diff in his 2wd buggy!!! Let me put this in perspective… 😅 This was Saturday evening after qualifying was over and Kody Numendahl had 2 TQ runs and Spencer had 1 after 3 rounds. Spencer would have to TQ round 4 Sunday morning and run the faster overall time to get the tie-breaker. The problem was, the track is normally not as fast in the morning and we needed something special. Kinwald huddled us up and told Spencer to try a gear-diff!!! Whoa!!! We were pretty skeptical and it took some serious convincing, but BK asked him to put all his trust in him and go for it. Sunday morning came around and it was showtime! Spencer proceeded to put in a flawless run and turned the only 16-lapper of the weekend to take the overall TQ. The car was so good, he went on to win the 10-minute A main by a lap!⠀

As a bonus, I was able to pull out a win in the 40+ buggy class!!! That was my first time racing 40+…😂”
