In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Utah team driver, Kyle Robb!
1. When and how did you get started in RC? And what class do you compete in or did you primarily bash your vehicles?
I got started in RC when my dad brought home a T-Maxx when I was around 6. I used to go to the track occasionally, but I didn’t start racing until about 5 years ago. I primarily race Mod 2wd Buggy and Mod 4wd Buggy.
2. Stock, or 17.5 2wd Buggy, is the biggest class in off-road electric racing currently. Why do you think this is and do you see these as a problem moving forward with the racing industry?
I think stock 2wd buggy is the biggest class currently because of how fast the cars are now. More and more now you are seeing 17.5 cars being just as fast and being able to clear the same jumps as mod cars so there’s becoming less and less reason to put a faster motor in their car. 17.5 motors are so fast nowadays that on smaller tracks its sometimes the only motor you need on them. I don’t think its too much of a problem other than now you’re seeing less and less people moving up to mod and now you have some mod guys moving down to 17.5 and only running that.
3. On many indoor dirt off-road tracks it seems like the hot ticket is to run slicks. Do you prefer slightly treaded tires or slicks? And why do you think things have moved this way?
I would say I prefer running slicks. If you’re going to a track that runs slicks it can eliminate some of the work of trying to find the right tires so that you can focus on your car’s setup. I think it has moved this way because of the car setups being able to support it and all the innovation with tire compounds.
4. In your opinion, when heading to the track what is the JConcepts product that is a must have on race day and why?
JConcepts is pretty vital to my RC program so I would say all of the JConcepts tires and accessories that I run on my car is a must have. Without them I wouldn’t be able to go fast!
5. Besides RC cars, what other hobbies are you into?
Besides RC I like to play video games, snowboard, ride mountain bikes and golf.
