This past weekend Mills Pond RC Raceway in Fort Lauderdale, FL was host to Round 2 of the 2021 Florida RC Championships.
The event kicked off on Friday with practice and it was limited to 175 total entries.
The final entry count was just below that at 171 cars and there were 10 different classes to compete in on the track’s red clay surface.
On Saturday qualifying began and two rounds were ran that day. To lock up the top qualifying position in a class a driver’s best run out of two would be used towards their final qualifying rank.
The top 10 cars automatically made the A Main and they also bumped up two more cars that finished 1st and 2nd from the B Main. So that meant a total of 12 cars for each A main race on the track’s large layout.
The nitro classes ran one single 25 minute A Main while the electric classes used a AA format. Each A Main race for the electric classes ran for 8 minutes except for the Novice class which only ran 6 minute mains. For the AA Mains once again only a driver’s best finish counted towards their final ranking position. We had a lot of team drivers at this race so let’s see how they performed starting with the 1/8 Pro Nitro Buggy class.
Team driver Julien Oliveras was able to lock up the TQ for this class on Saturday! Starting on the pole for the 25 minute A Main that night he would lead the entire field for the race minus one pit stop, but unfortunately with two laps to go his buggy ran out of fuel so he would have to settle for 2nd place overall.

In the 1/8 Pro E Buggy class once again it would be Julien starting in 1st place for the AA mains! In A1 he lead the pack for the entire 8 minutes and just cross the line to gain the victory lap on the competition. In A2 he would get off to rough start dropping back to 4th place on the first lap. He would put down his fastest lap of A2 on lap number 6 to jump back into 2nd place. He would continue to chase the leader but time expired before he could catch him so he would finish in 2nd. But after the times were calculated his A1 win was faster than the A2 winner which secured him the win that weekend!

In the 1/8 Pro Nitro Truggy class, team driver Bobby Smith would lead the team as he locked in the top qualifying position! In the main event he would lead for several laps before having to retire early from the race on lap 25. His teammate Kawri Brown was running towards the front of the pack and would battle back and forth for the lead starting on lap 23. He would continue to swap positions with 2nd place but then on lap 43 he pulled away for good and crossed the finish line in 1st!
