That’s a wrap! The 2021 NCTS3 Series has come to a close and we celebrated the finale at Thunder Road RC Raceway this past weekend. It was a weekend full of great battles, community, and celebration! It was also the first Midwest Carpet Nationals at Thunder Road under the new ownership of Brian Bohlman.
For those of you who don’t know Thunder Road RC Raceway is a gorgeous facility that provides a lot of service and opportunity to RC Hobbyists. They have a huge hobby shop, an indoor carpet track, an outdoor turf track, an indoor rock crawling course, slot cars, and more to come!
In regards to tires, this was a spec tire event so it was Swaggers in the front and Twin Pins in the rear. Stay Tuned for our behind the scenes vlog to see more of the facility and our drivers’ experiences.

2wd Modified Buggy was a wild ride as things were close all weekend long. Ryan Maifield was your TQ and came out of the gate strong taking the win in A1. Joe Pillars and Kyle Holmberg had great races, running 2 & 3 for most of A1. Tollard had to chase them down to regain his top 3 spot. He was able to make a clean pass on Pillars in the sweeper before the middle tabletop. He eeked his way up to the top. Tollard took over 2nd and Setser was in 3rd. In the last 15 seconds of the race Pillars and Setser got side by side and Pillars took 3rd for A1. In A2, they were driving smooth, Maifield traction rolled by the wallride and Tollard got by into 1st. Maifield closely followed Setser’s line, looking for a way into 2nd place. The top 3 were running close together, Maifield got by Setser in the sweeper. Maifield began to hunt down Tollard. Cole Tollard said otherwise and took the win, following with a second win in A3!

With a one-two punch, Ryan Maifield knocked out the win in 4wd Modified Buggy! It’s incredible to watch these guys drive as it’s crucial they don’t make any mistakes if they want to win. Tollard and Setser swapped positions a few times, constantly battling for that 2nd place spot. It was truly about who could push and last the longest with a clean line. The main battle was for the final podium spots between Lee Setser and Cole Tollard. Setser was able to outdrive Tollard in A1 finishing 2nd, but Tollard was able to surge past Setser in A2 taking 2nd. In A2, Tollard and Setser touched, Tollard waited for Setser with great sportsmanship but the marshal accidentally put Setser’s buggy toward the wall, getting the worst of it. Tollard was able to surge through the last lap and take 2nd. It came down to the final race to see who would take 2nd overall! In A3 Setser surged out in front and created space. Tollard was pushing to stay in front of Reavis in the last half. Setser was able to win A3 and Tollard finished right behind him.
It was definitely a beautiful weekend out in Waite Park, Minnesota and we look forward to returning in the future! We want to thank every single driver that came out to one of our INS or NCTS races. It wouldn’t be possible without you! Shoutout to Matt Olsen with MOD Media for doing the live stream and interviews! It was awesome to have that extra high-quality coverage for the viewers at home! We look forward to the 2022 season and stay tuned for the release of dates/venues!
