This past weekend the 2022 A-Main Challenge was held at Thunder Alley R/C Raceway in sunny Beaumont, CA. This 1/8 off-road nitro and electric event kicked off on Friday and there were 16 different classes to compete in. This event was packed with competition as it drew a staggering 456 entries!
On Friday drivers made their way to the track to get settled in for three great days of racing. Practice sessions opened up earlier that day and the race format called for four rounds of qualifying. A driver’s two best runs would be counted for their overall qualifying score (qual points) in each class. Due to the size of the event, at 1pm the first of two qualifying rounds began that day and round 2 was halted just after midnight.
Saturday morning at 7am practice opened up again for any drivers that couldn’t throw any laps down the previous day, or if they only ran their two qualifiers and missed out on the practice sessions. About 9:15am the final heats for round 2 of qualifying resumed and then it was straight into round 3. At noon a free lunch was provided to all the racers, and the fourth and final round of qualifying completed shortly after 11pm that night.
Leading the charge for the JConcepts race team was team driver Dylan Nelson. He competed in three different classes which included Pro Nitro Buggy and Truggy as well as Pro E-Buggy.
Starting with Pro E-Buggy, Dylan was able to TQ one round of qualifying and started 2nd for the 10 minute single A Main. He would stay in 2nd place for about seven laps before a few small mistakes would drop him all the way back to 5th. He continued to work his way back up to the front and would lock up the final podium spot when time had expired!
