The 2022 ROAR 1:10 Off-Road Nationals has officially come to a close. It was a weekend of highs, lows, and success! Before we dive into the results let’s back up to last Tuesday. The JConcepts crew flew into San Diego on Tuesday afternoon to set up and prepare for the week ahead. This year the ROAR 1:10 Off-Road Dirt Nationals was at SDRC Raceway. We were previously at SDRC for the Top Gun Shootout last December and returned for the INS12 Race in February. These two previous races were the perfect excuse for drivers to not only race but practice for the ROAR Nationals.
The schedule for the week was the ROAR standard:
Wednesday: Track Sanctioned Practice
Thursday: ROAR Official Practice and 2 Rounds of Seeding
Friday: 2 Rounds of Qualifying
Saturday: 2 Rounds of Qualifying
Sunday: Main Events: Triple A-Mains
The track layout flowed well but drivers felt like it was more technical then meets the eye. The layout was raced counter clockwise so the first obstacle on the course would be that center triple. From there drivers would turn into another straight area, over a double, through the sideways tabletop, over another triple, into an S-Turn, over a mini quad, and then a kicker onto the front straight. The two most challenging sections seemed to be lining up just right for that triple in front of the drivers stand, and making that double before the straightaway without hitting the pole or over shooting it.

A1: Dakotah Phend led the way after taking the TQ in every class he ran. Maifield moved up into 3rd and was hunting down Cavalieri for 2nd. The top three drivers were only tenths apart. Halfway through, Cavalieri made a mistake over the far left double. Maifield got by into 2nd and Champlin into 3rd. There were 2 minutes left in the race and the top three began to spread out. The race concluded with Phend in 1st, Maifield in 2nd, and Champlin in 3rd.
A2: At the tone it was Phend out in front, Cavalieri in 2nd, and Horne in 3rd. Horne was looking for the inside line, but Phend kept closing the door. Phend made a mistake over the center triple and Horne accidentally got caught up in it. Phend waited for Horne and displayed good sportsmanship. That allowed Cavalieri and Rivkin to move into 1st and 2nd. A few laps later, Horne got caught on that double before the front straight. Rivkin was in 2nd and Phend moved into 3rd. Maifield was running 4th. 1st through 4th were separated by tenths of a second. Phend got it wrong over the far left double, which allowed Maifield and Horne to move up into 3rd and 4th. Seconds later, over the next triple, Maifield got it wrong. Horne got by into 3rd and Phend into 4th. On the next lap, Horne got it wrong over that same triple and Phend/Maifield moved into 3rd/4th. They were the new closest battle on the track in that final lap. They both were making that final turn onto the straight. Maifield tried tot take the inside line, they both went full pin and crossed the line at the same time. They had the exact same times down to the hundredths. After rewatching the footage it was determined Phend was slightly ahead and he took 3rd. The race concluded with Cavalieri, Rivkin, and Phend as the top three.
A3: Phend had a win and so did Cavalieri. The pressure was on to try and take the National Title. The start was clean and they were hammering their way around the track. Maifield and Champlin were able to get by Horne into 3rd and 4th place. Phend and Cavalieri were still battling out front. Halfway through, Cavalieri landed on the pipe after the drivers stand triple. Maifield was able to take advantage and get by into 2nd. A minute later, Maifield got a little weird over that dreaded double before the straight and Cavalieri took back 2nd. Phend took the win and was officially the new 2wd Modified Buggy ROAR National Champion!
4wd Modified Buggy: Spencer Rivkin (1), Ryan Maifield (2), Dakotah Phend (4), Broc Champlin (5)
A1: The race had a clean start with Phend out in front. Rivkin and Champlin were running 2nd and 3rd. A couple of laps in, Phend had a bobble over the double before the straightaway. This allowed Rivkin and Champlin to slide by into 1st or 2nd. On the next lap, over the triple nearest to the driver stand, Phend jumped over Champlin back into 2nd. However, shortly after that, Phend got caught on the pipe on the last turn and Champlin had a small tumble. Horne got by Champlin into 3rd and Phend got the worst of it, as he fell back. Rivkin was still out in front. Champlin and Horne went side by side over the center triple. For a second, Champlin took the lead, but they were side by side again through the straight section and Horne pulled out into 2nd. The race concluded as Rivkin, Horne, and Champlin.
A2: On the first lap, Phend went a little wide over the drivers stand triple which allowed Rivkin to take an early lead. Phend was in 2nd and Maifield moved up to 3rd. The top three were running very close together waiting for each other to make a mistake. After the center triple halfway through, Phend got a little wobbly and Maifield moved into 2nd. There were 60 seconds left in the race, Maifield got a little sideways over the center triple and Phend took back 2nd. They were essentially side by side over the double before the straight and Maifield sent it out in front, taking back 2nd place. Horne was also up in the mix and found himself in 3rd. Rivkin won A2 and was officially the 2022 ROAR 1:10 Off-Road Dirt 4wd Modified Buggy National Champion! Maifield finished 2nd and Horne finished 3rd.
A3: Spencer Rivkin already took the early victory. This race would determine the remaining podium positions. Phend led the way with Maifield in 2nd and Champlin in 3rd. This race was relatively uneventful. Those top three were starting to space out some, but still in the fights. Maifield and Champlin were probably the closest battle on the track, but never swapped positions. The race concluded as Phend, Maifield, and Champlin as your top three.
Modified Stadium Truck: Dakotah Phend (1), Spencer Rivkin (3)
Overall, we had a stellar weekend at the ROAR 1:10 Off-Road Dirt Nationals. Dakotah Phend is up to his 7th ROAR National Title of the year, and took three last year as well. He has been on fire these last two years and his hard work is paying off! Congratulations, to Spencer Rivkin on the 4wd Modified Buggy Title after winning A1 and A2! Lastly, we had two drivers take their very first ROAR National Titles! Doug Lariviere has been grinding hard these last couple of years and now he is a ROAR National Champion. He took the overall TQ, won A1, and won A2 of 13.5 4wd Buggy for an early victory! Chase Raymond did the same in 13.5 Stadium Truck and top seeded as well!
