There is a lot that can be achieved by changing compounds in 1/10th and 1/8th scale racing, but sometimes the gap between the compounds feels too large.
Over the years, different ways of altering the insert has bridged the gap between compounds for different desired effects. In the past, typically if you want more stability out of a softer compound you could glue the foam insert to the wheel which causes less ballooning of the tire and often makes the sidewall of the tire feel stiffer.
When the sidewall hits the side of the foam, generally the foam insert will also move or give a little. When the insert is glued, the sidewall just hits it and stops, giving a stiffer feel. As time went on though even that can feel like too big of a change.
RM2 1/8th Buggy Bands
RM2 1/8th Truggy Bands
The RM2 Insert Bands were released to emulate that feeling of a glued foam without being so drastic of a change. The Insert Bands slip into the grooves of the foam creating a tighter fit between the foam and the wheel while still allowing the foam to move in extreme circumstances.
The sidewall will still move the insert a small amount while cornering and the insert can still expand under acceleration but much less than without the bands. The bands create a more natural change on track and can allow drivers to continue to use a softer compound for traction without loosing stability.
RM2 Insert Bands are available for both 1/8th Buggy, which also work for Short Course inserts and Truggy inserts and come in packages of 24pcs (8 tires worth). They are an effective tool to have in your arsenal at the track for all different types of surfaces.
