In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Utah team driver, Darnell DeBrule!
1. Which professional driver did you follow when you first started RC racing, and why? Or perhaps you followed a local or regional driver?
Ryan Maifield has always been an intriguing person to me. Love his no nonsense approach especially during the recent World’s at Hobby Action. My respect level for him went up 10x listening to him step in with a solution to quickly resolve not having enough tires for the first day of 4wd qualifying.
2. In your opinion, what needs to be done to make RC more “mainstream” and get more people involved?
Find ways to reduce the most significant barriers to entry; cost and time. Also finding ways to remind people of how fun the hobby can be which is number one reason most get into it in the first place. Sometimes racing can be overwhelming for both new and casual racers. Personally, I took a year off from racing because it stopped being fun and enjoyable. I’ve been back now for about a year because I rediscovered why I got into the hobby in the first place. Let’s call it my inner child come out to play.
3. From your experience what is the easiest AND hardest maintenance task on your RC cars?
Easiest: Shocks. Hardest: Diffs. Getting old diff fluid out takes patience.
4. Which JConcepts product is your favorite to date, and why?
The Aluminum Camber and Ride Height Gauge set.
5. You are obviously highly skilled when it comes to RC cars, but what is one skill or hidden talent that folks might be surprised to find out about you?
I have an ability to consume and digest vast amounts of data in a short time frame. I don’t look like it, but I’m really just a nerd.
