In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Virginia team driver, Javon Mallory!
1. Let’s get a little background on your start to RC racing. Were you introduced to it by a friend, family member, or maybe read about or watched something on social media?
My dad got me started in RC when I was younger at a track called East Coast Hobbies racing 2wd and 4wd Short Course Truck. When they closed we took a break for some years and I got back into it in 2019 when I got into 1/8 e buggy and nitro buggy racing.
2. What classes do you enjoy to compete in today? Is there another class you would like to see comeback or increase in popularity so you could compete in it as well?
1/8 nitro buggy is my favorite but I like running e buggy a lot too. The 1/10 gas truck class would have been cool to see come back but it never really took off in my area.
3. If you have been racing for a while now you have probably glued up 100s of tires. So what gluing tips do you have for beginning racers?
I like to use the JConcepts green Medium Bore Glue Tips Needles with the Medium Advanced Formulated Tire Glue. The medium glue is easier to work with than the others I’ve used before switching to JConcepts. Being a little bit thicker helps it to not make a big mess if I mess up. 🙂 The green tips kind of just add to what I said they’re easier to work with than the long plastic ones.
4. Name one JConcepts product that you feel is overlooked by many but you find it very useful.
I don’t think it’s overlooked, but Blue and Green compound Reflex tires and Razor wings go with me to almost every race. They’re definitely two of the most versatile products.
5. Besides piloting a RC car what other hidden talent or skill set do you possess that might surprise someone?
I do CNC machining on the side and I enjoy designing and testing my own parts. Whether it’s just a cosmetic part or a part that improves performance by changing geometry.
