Friday5 With Team Driver Jim Merritts

In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Virginia team driver, Jim Merritts!

1. We have to ask everyone this in our interviews, how did you get your start in RC racing?

When I was younger and racing motocross someone was playing in the pits with an RC car. It looked like a lot of fun so I bought a Tamiya Frog to play with. After knee surgery I heard of a dirt oval track not far away, I won the B main with totally stock car then was shown an RC10 car, and A main wins came very soon afterwards and the hook was set.

2. In your region you do quite a bit of racing on off-road carpet. So what advice do you have for off-road dirt drivers that are trying out carpet for the 1st time?

First of all, appreciate the cleanliness LOL. Seriously though, grip is everywhere so stay in touch with your throttle control as it’s needed for corner momentum. I ran on-road for a year to adjust to that, without the jumps to throw you off, and it paid off so keep that in mind during your transition.

3. What classes do you enjoy to compete in today? Is there another class you would like to see comeback or increase in popularity so you could compete in it as well?

Currently 17.5 2wd Buggy and just started Stadium Truck. Occasionally 21.5 Asphalt Touring Car at local hobby shop. As far as comeback classes, I have done most everything since around 1991, but this hobby has its quirks at times and classes will come and go in popularity. If a few people get together and work on getting a class going again it seems like others will join in.

4. Which JConcepts product is your favorite to date, and why?

Well, we all say this, but the correct tires for sure. I learned that the hard way along time ago and JConcepts tires have been great in all genres of off-road for me. Titanium turnbuckles, wings, wheels, tool holder and the list goes on and on for my cars and pits.

5. Name one thing people might be surprised to learn about you.

I was an amateur musician and songwriter for awhile until health issues had me walk away and back to RC. Also, our travel team is three generations deep and I have become Pap Pap in that group. So if you see me at the track, stop by and say hello. For now, Pap Pap out but remember, “Never give up because sometimes the race comes to you”!
