In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Oklahoma team driver, Colton Jones!
1. Let’s get a little background on your start to RC racing. Were you introduced to it by a friend, family member, or maybe read about or watched something on social media?
My whole family is a racer in some sort of fashion. From full size sprint cars to RC, we do it all. My dad, older brother and sister all raced RC. I started five years ago. My first year actually racing was with an Team Associated SC10. About four years ago I got an 1/8 E-Buggy and started racing that. With my dad being in the military, he had to deploy so that year we only had the chance to race in the spring. The year after that we decided to try some Street Stock and dirt oval racing and I ended up winning the championship at Taylor Park RC Raceway in Yukon, OK! Last year we had the opportunity to race 1/8 scale all year. I ran in the Novice class and again won the yearly series at both Shaw’s RC Track in Ardemore, OK and Indy RC World in Garland, TX. This year I moved up into the Sportsman E-Buggy class and finished 6th overall.
2. What class do you prefer to compete in today, and why?
So far 1/8 E-Buggy is my favorite class to race. My dad has let me run his 1/8 E-Truggy a couple times at some club races and I am starting to like it even more!
3. When life interferes and you can’t get out to the track, what other activities do you dabble with to meet your RC fix?
When we cant race I enjoy video games and target shooting with my bow and also fishing. I enjoy reading too. Right now I am in the middle of Invisible Speed. Its a great book and has helped me communicate with my dad on what I need my car to do better on the track!
4. Which JConcepts product is your favorite to date, and why?
My favorite JC product has to be the Reflex tire! No matter where we race we always have a set or two. To date they have never let me down. Blues, Greens, Aquas…. it doesn’t matter they just WORK!
5. Besides RC cars, what other hobbies are you into?
My other hobbies include school along with shooting, fishing and video games. I’m just starting my Freshman year of High School, so it has been a bit of a change in pace. I play on the soccer team as well.
