In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to United Kingdom team driver, Darren Windsor!
1. Let’s get a little background on your start to RC racing. Were you introduced to it by a friend, family member, or maybe read about or watched something on social media?
I first got a sight of RC as a child when I would go to watch my Dad race 1/8 Nitro at Herts Nitro Model Club in Ware. Ironically I would never really get into 1/8, 1/10 was always the easier class for a youngster to get involved with. I grew to love that specific club a whole lot, eventually having taken over the 10th section of the club at 16 years old, and helping to transform it to where it is today. I attended most races with my dad, so it feels unusual to be here in the US racing without him.
2. What is one tip you have for new drivers getting into RC racing that you would like to share?
My tip for new drivers is to simply have fun. I have to regularly remind myself of this too sometimes! It’s a hobby and most of the time one big family, you never know when your last race may be so learn to love it and enjoy every moment. Some people commit to the hobby as a career, which is absolutely fine, however those who do it for a hobby should never compare themselves to the top drivers – it’s a completely different life.
3. For the rest of 2025 what races, series, or other RC related event are you looking forward to attending and why?
Being my first year racing in the US, I am generally excited for each new track I get to attend and all the people I will meet along the way. If I was to choose a place, it would be Hoosier for the JConcepts INS15 race. I’ve always found that track exciting to watch on videos. I’m also looking forward to my second visit to Beach RC for the Masters of Dirt 2025. I met some cool people there in October 2024!
4. Which JConcepts product, in your opinion, is a must-have on race day when going to the track and why?
Having recently purchased these, I have to say the range of Tool and Hardware Storage Boxes just released are top quality and are now a necessity for me at the track. They come with screws to secure the dividers in place, ensuring those little washers stick in there compartments!
5. Besides piloting a RC car what other hidden talent or skill set do you possess that might surprise someone?
I have been an avid football fan and player my whole life so RC was never my most prioritized “sport”. Over the last four years I have also been playing a lot of darts having joined a team in the US now too. That one may be surprising to people!
