Friday5 With Team Driver Robert Chapman

In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Texas team driver, Robert Chapman!

1. How did you first hear about racing RC cars? And what classes did you compete in?

I was introduced to RC cars by my father, Ronnie Chapman. I believe I started out in a Mini T which didn’t last long because I drew such a interest into racing so fast that I started running a stadium truck. I remember my dad would let me run it in the kids class when we traveled to out of town races and he would turn around, throw a new battery in it and run it as well.

2. In your opinion, what classes have you noticed that seem to be in a decline? And how would you try to resolve this so there is more participation?

I’ve noticed a decline in the The Short Course Modified class. It’s definitely starting to fade out as newer classes begin to emerge. I feel the best way to save the class would be to run the class every once in a while. Run it every other week or two weeks. There are so many classes that can be ran nowadays (in Dirt Oval) that it’s nearly impossible to bring classes like that back. I understand it’s great to bring in/ create new classes, but eventually that new class will cycle out and begin to fade. It’s a never ending cycle in my opinion.

3. Dirt Oval has really grown in popularity over the past few years. In your opinion what is the main cause of this increase of left turn drivers?

The exposure has definitely helped the oval community. Being able to share stuff via Facebook or the web can quickly draw interest and lead to people wanting to learn more and be involved with the sport. Along with how easy it is to get into the hobby nowadays. Walk into a hobby shop, buy a 2wd buggy and you’ve got yourself a street stock (in addition to a body mount, body, and front bumper).

4. When it comes to new products released from JConcepts, what are you most excited to see and why? Is it a new body, new tire, new accessory, etc.?

In addition to question 3, JConcepts has also contributed to the rise in Dirt Oval interest through their Dirt Oval product line. Items like the 87’ Monte Carlo street stock body, multiple Late Model Body’s, Sprinter tire, and 9 Shot wheels. All in which make me happy to see that JConcepts supports the Dirt Oval community and want to help the hobby grow. I look forward to seeing what else they have in store for us!

5. Name one thing people might be surprised to know about you.

I’m a really good piano player. Started in Middle School and it’s stuck with me ever since. I’d definitely call it a hidden talent of mine.
