Last weekend SoCal Nitro Raceway hosted the TNR Fuels A-Main Challenge. This 1/8 nitro and electric race saw a combined 261 entries with 14 different classes to compete in. On Friday there were two rounds of controlled practice followed by two rounds of qualifying. Each qualifier ran for six minutes as drivers got off to an early start to compete for the top qualifying position in their class that weekend. On Saturday two more rounds of qualifying were held and due to the large amount of entries a few lower mains were ran late that night.
To lock in the TQ for the weekend a driver’s best two runs were counted while the other two were used as drops. Each main consisted of 12 cars and the top two drivers in the B Main could transfer to the A. But depending on the amount of entries per class, some mains ran all entries if they didn’t exceed 13 cars.
Our own Adam Drake was in attendance and he competed in the Pro Buggy 1/8 Nitro class. On Friday he noted that the track started out pretty loose with a lot of sand and small rocks on the top surface. But, by the time qualifying began those got cleaned off by the many practice laps thrown down on the layout. So for his first qualifier he used our Green compound Reflex tires and finished 4th for the round. For round 2 he switch over to A2 compound Reflex tires and finished 4th again but gained a full lap on his run.
On Saturday for round 2 he opted for Blue compound Detox tires and finished 2nd overall putting in his fastest run of the weekend! For the final round he tried Blue compound Reflex tires and finished 3rd for the round and only two seconds off his fastest run.
For the 45 minute A-Main he started 4th on the grid and elected to run the Reflex tire in the Blue compound again that he used in qualifying. By the 3rd lap he had taken over 1st place but would drop back to 3rd again on lap 5. He would take over the lead again on lap 15 then fall back to 2nd on lap 17. He would consistently run in 2nd till lap 39 when he took over the lead once again. He would drop back to 2nd again after a fuel stop on lap 49 but then take over the lead again the following lap and never look back as he rolled across the line in 1st place!
