Friday5 With Team Driver Angus Matheson

In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Montana team driver, Angus Matheson!

1. How did you get started in RC? Was it racing right away, or did you bash vehicles before you found out about the RC race scene?

I had a slow start into the hobby. As a kid I remember my dad had a Clodbuster and a nitro buggy. We used to stop at the Diggers Dungeon in Kill Devil Hills, NC and I always thought the Grave Digger RCs were the coolest thing on display there! Fast forward to age 30… I found myself with a basher after boredom on a rainy Saturday at the Traxxas dealer. After a few months, I realized I was addicted! I quickly got into racing after meeting the Bartlett family, who frequent races all over the northwest and other big races like DNC and Silver State. I quickly realized we needed to start a racing scene in Montana… so I organized a group of motivated guys to help put things in motion to build a race track. Four of us now own and operate a little grassroots style track in Kalispell Montana called Glacier RC Raceway (GRCR) built by NCT track builder Chad Dodd! Now I am almost strictly into racing!

2. What is your biggest win to date and why?

I usually perform well in 4wd Short Course Truck, but I have been improving a lot more in Nitro and Ebuggy these days. I made top 10 in both A-mains at the Northwest Championship Tour this year. My 1st place Ebuggy in the GRCR round 1 was the biggest for me as it got me hooked on trying to lead the pack!

3. From your experience what is the easiest AND hardest maintenance task on your RC cars?

Easiest is changing diff fluids. Hardest (to motivate for) is a full tear down and clean.

4. When it comes to new products released from JConcepts, what are you most excited to see and why? Is it a new body, new tire, new accessory, etc.?

I love the JConcepts Tire Balancer!! I got really excited when I saw the “For Immediate Release” post on Facebook. It’s just so practical, looks super clean, and low profile for transporting/traveling! Obviously all the bodies and tires coming out are amazing! The Stalker tire so far has been working really well at our track!

5. Besides RC cars, what other hobbies are you into?

Snowboarding is my passion in the winter, I have even gone as far as shaping and pressing my own snowboard in my garage. I enjoy mountain biking/hiking in the summer. I dabble in screen printing as well!
