It’s that time of year where the crisp air begins to set in, then leaves begin to change, and Starbucks drops their fall flavors. For us at JConcepts, it means that the NCTS Turf Nationals is right around the corner! We don’t get to experience the Fall Season like the North East does so we get extra excited to travel up to RC Madness in Enfield, CT for some Turf Racing.
You’ve heard us say it once, but we’ll say it again, RC Madness has everything you could ever want! New to their offerings this year is their brand new drag strip! The facility features a fully stocked hobby shop, carpet track, mini b track, indoor & outdoor rock crawling, drag racing, an on road track, 1:8 Off Road track, Monster Truck racing, and more!
On Saturday the RCMTC group came and ran an event on the 1:8 Off Road Track! Jason Ruona was running back and forth between Turf Racing and Monster Truck Racing all day! He ran and won both the Retro and Pro Mod Classes! You can catch some of his runs and video of this content in our vlog (coming soon)!
In regards to the Turf, the track layout was a lot of fun and the drivers really enjoyed it! You can check out the layout in the photo below. We practiced all day Friday, did two rounds of qualifying Saturday, finished the final round Sunday, and moved right into mains. For the first time in NCTS history we decided to try an open tire event. That being said the JConcepts Team decided to stick to the old reliable Nessis in the Rear and Swaggers in the front. Some drivers also tried our newer Fuzz Bite Tire in the front as well.

Final Results:
2wd Modified Buggy: Dakotah Phend (1), Broc Champlin (2)
Dakotah Phend was able to check out in A1 & A2 of 2wd Modified Buggy which allowed him to secure the win early on! In A3 Broc Champlin took the win which helped him secure 2nd on the podium. In A2, Phend only had a 0.385 lead overall over Champlin. Aaron Kothman was fast this weekend as well, and laid down the hot lap of 19.30. Phend had a 6.5 second lead over Jennings during A1 that allowed him to get one win under his belt more easily.
4wd Modified Buggy: Broc Champlin (1), Cole Tollard (2)
In 4wd, Broc Champlin took the win in A1 & A2 which allowed him to secure his win first overall. Marcy was hanging on to Champlin for the first 2 minutes of the race, and Kothman was also quickly approaching. Setser, who was in 4th was able to make up time on Kothman. The real battle started to be between 2nd-4th place. In A1 Champlin was able to win with an 8 second lead! This was Cole Tollard’s first Turf race! He finished 4th in A2 and in A3 it was dark but he was able to lead the whole race, making it a clean run! He took 2nd overall on the podium!
13.5 4wd Buggy: Davey Batta (1), John Crovatta (3)
Davey Batta and Steve Fiume battled it out all weekend in the stock classes! Fiume is definitely a very fast driver local to RC Madness! This was Batta’s first Turf Race and after putting in the work he was able to pull off a win in both 13.5 4wd Buggy and 17.5 2wd Buggy!

We had such a blast this past weekend and we look forward to returning to RC Madness in the future! It’s a quick turn around for the JConcepts team as we will be heading to Southern Nationals in West Monroe, LA on Thursday! We’ll see you soon for some great 1:8 scale racing!
