In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to California team driver, Johnathan Schultz!
1. When you first got into RC racing, what pro driver did you look up to and why? Or maybe there was a local/regional driver that you followed?
When I first started racing RC the one driver I looked up to had to have been Ryan Cavaleri. Living on the west coast we often raced at West Coast Hobbies and would watch Cav click off blistering fast laps and his consistency was like none other at the time. Definitely showed a new driver like I was at the time what it took to be fast.
2. Drag racing in RC is huge right now. Why do you think this is, and do you think it is a “fad” or here to stay for many years?
Drag racing is massive right now and is continuing to grow rapidly. The reason I believe it is this big is because of two things. One being the money factor and second is who doesn’t like going as fast as they can? I don’t think it’s a fad especially with all of these big money races popping up every year and I think it will continue to grow.
3. When life interferes and you can’t wheel your RC car, how do you quench your thirst for RC? Do you work on your car, listen to a RC podcast, watch some racing videos, read RC magazines or books, etc?
Being a full time college student life definitely does get in the way of running my RC cars. Wrenching and listening to either a live stream or podcast usually calms my eagerness down.
4. In your opinion, when heading to the track what is the JConcepts product that is a must have on race day and why?
In my opinion the best JConcepts product to have when going to the track has to be their tires. Whether it’s 1/10th scale off-road, 1/8th scale off-road or drag racing their tires always have the most grip consistency and longevity than anything out there.
5. Besides RC cars, what other hobbies are you into?
When I’m not racing RC I tend to find my self riding my dirt bike, working on cars or golfing.
