INS12 Summer Indoor Nationals

Summer Indoor Nationals

Over the weekend we hit the third stop in the JConcepts INS12 Series! The Hobbytown Hobbyplex has been a part of our series for a little while now and we love going there! The plex has been around since 2004 and has hosted a plethora of races from National Events to club races. The facility has a rock crawling course, carpet track, and an off-road dirt track! The hobby shop is well stocked with all your hobby needs and is the largest HobbyTown in the Midwest.

Alex Sturgeon ran the race program and built the track. This year he extended the track to the far side of the building for a larger layout! The layout flowed well and everyone had great things to say about it! The layout had a few doubles, triples, tabletops, and a “kick-up” section. For tires, we ran the trusty Gold Ellipses that we’ve run in years past. However, as the weekend progressed something new happened for the first time. Drivers started to experiment with silver ellipses and soon Silver slicks. Silver slicks ended up being the hot ticket when it came to the main day. Additionally, we debuted the Mini 2wd Modified Buggy class, thanks to Alex Sturgeon, and it was a blast! Be on the lookout for the A-Main video on our YouTube channel!

A1: Dustin Evans led the way in A1. He quickly made a small gap on the field and Aydin Horne had a freight train behind him. Champlin was hunting him down, he wanted that 2nd position. Setser was running 4th and created some space between himself and the rest of the field. As Horne and Champlin entered the center section, Champlin sent it over the double and got out in front of Horne into 2nd. From there they held their positions. The race concluded with Dustin Evans, Broc Champlin, and Aydin Horne.

A2: Evans sprinted off the starting grid to keep his space from the rest of the field. Horne snagged the pipe on the first turn and Champlin got by into 2nd. Horne was now in 3rd and Setser was still in 4th. Horne was still close to Champlin looking for a way around him. Setser got caught on the pipe before the last tabletop and Rinderknecht moved into 4th. Champlin got caught on the pipe before the first double and Horne took back 2nd. Rinderknecht and Setser also got by. Rinderknecht went a little wide over the tabletop allowing Setser and Champlin to move on by.  Champlin hit the pipe shortly after going over the double which caught Rinderknecht too. Setser now had some breathing room. The race concluded with Dustin Evans, Aydin Horne, and Lee Setser.

A3: Aydine Horne led the way with Broc Champlin in 2nd. On the first lap, Horne got a little squirrelly right before the far left back double and Champlin got caught up with him. Setser flew by into the lead avoiding the chaos. Tom Rinderknecht also got by into 2nd. Lee Setser led the way for about half of the race. Over the center step down, Setser went a little wide and Rinderknecht tried to take the inside which resulted in a little mishap. When it was all set and one Rinderknecht took the lead. Champlin got by into 2nd. Dominic Paccione was also able to make a pass into 3rd. The race concluded with Tom Rinderknecht, Broc Champlin, and Dominic Paccione.

4wd Modified Buggy: Broc Champlin (1)

A1: Champlin led the way with Evans very close behind. The top two started to create a gap from the rest of the pack. Horne and Setser were running 3 and 4. Horne was trying to hold his line so Setser couldn’t get by. They went over to the tabletop and got into it. Tom Rinderknecht got past them into 3rd. The top three cruised around the track for the remainder of the race. Setser stayed in 4th until lap 11 when Horne got by. The race concluded with Broc Champlin, Dustin Evans, and Tom Rinderknecht.

A2: Champlin led the way once again. Could he take this one for an early victory? He was pushing hard, Evans was trying to keep close. Dustin snagged the pipe on the left side of the track and Horne got by into 2nd. Setser and Tollard were battling in 4th and 5th. Setser got it wrong before the tabletop and Tollard moved up into 4th. Tollard was making up ground on Evans. Evans made another small mistake which allowed Tollard to take 3rd.  Champlin won which gave him the overall victory! The race concluded with Broc Champlin, Aydin Horne, and Cole Tollard!

A3: Champlin already wrapped up the win! Dustin Evans would lead this one out. Horne was running 2nd and Setser was running 3rd. Everyone was pushing hard but maintaining their positions. There was one minute and 40 seconds left in the race. Tollard got by Setser into 3rd. Dustin snagged the pipe before the straightaway, Horne almost made the pass but Evans blocked it. They both went over the final tabletop before the line side by side. Horne got it wrong and Tollard moved into 2nd.  In the final few seconds, Tollard got a little squirrely and Horne took back second. The race concluded with Dustin Evans, Aydin Horne, and Cole Tollard.
