Friday5 With Team Driver Steve Culbert

In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Ohio team driver, Steve Culbert!

1. When and how did you get started in RC? And what class do you compete in or did you primarily bash your vehicles?

I’ve always loved RC after finding an issue of RC Car Action magazine in a grocery store in the late 80’s when I was 12 years old. Long story short it was financially impossible for me to get into the hobby until I was older and working so I carried this magazine with me everywhere for years! In 1999 I bought a Losi XX and it was on from there!

2. What is your favorite class to race in today and why?

Definitely E-buggy! The size, speed, power and toughness of these machines is incredible! I like the fact that mechanical and/or electrical issues are minimized with these simple machines. If my results are not what I want them to be it’s likely all on me and not on a fluke flame out, bad pit stop, etc.

3. If you have been racing for a while now you have probably glued up 100s of tires. So what gluing tips do you have for beginning racers?

Yes, probably thousands! Take your time at first! Thin glue is great for quick mounting, but learn to do it with medium glue. Use high quality CA and tire bands like what JConcepts offers. Clean, prepare and mount your wheels and tires in one sitting. Do not clean them then mount them days later! You also don’t need to use a ton of CA since a little goes a long way!!

4. When it comes to new products released from JConcepts, what are you most excited to see and why? Is it a new body, new tire, new accessory, etc.?

The most exciting new products would be any time a tire is released, especially for 1:8 scale. The JConcepts lineup is so impressive it’s always interesting and exciting to see how in the world it can get better!

5. Name one thing people might be surprised to know about you.

Movies ending in triumph, victory or overcoming major obstacles always make my eyes water a little bit!
