In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Oklahoma team driver, Michael Twilling!
1. When you first got into RC racing, what pro driver did you look up to and why? Or maybe there was a local/regional driver that you followed?
In my early days of RC racing I had a great group of guys to learn from and chase around the track. Guys like Cody Hollis and Kyle Skidmore were always the benchmark “regional” drivers that I tried to beat weekly. But Ryan Maifield has always been the guy I could watch drive for hours. I love his aggressive, punched driving style. He was always a cool dude and was open with what he was running and what he thought worked.
2. On many indoor dirt off-road tracks it seems like the hot ticket is to run slicks. Do you prefer slightly treaded tires or slicks? And why do you think things have moved this way?
I always enjoyed driving my cars on treaded tires. I feel that tracks have shifted to slicks for the ease of tire prep. It’s a lot easier for a newer racer to throw slicks on and have traction than it can be with treads. But there’s nothing like driving with the trim switch ha-ha.
3. In your opinion, what needs to be done to make RC more “mainstream” and get more people involved?
I think the racing format could be altered to maybe make the weekend a little shorter. Three to four full days at the track is a little much. I would also love to see a “Pro” series.
4. Name one JConcepts product that you feel is overlooked by many but you find it very useful. It could be a tool, tread pattern, wing, etc.
I’ve always felt JConcepts provides really great Aero options and they’ve all made a big difference in car performance on the track. The F2 line of bodies is my go to body too.
5. You are obviously highly skilled when it comes to RC cars, but what is one skill or hidden talent that folks might be surprised to find out about you?
I’m a below average golfer in my spare time ha-ha.
