In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Minnesota team driver, Brayden Nelson!
1. When you first got into RC racing, what pro driver did you look up to and why? Or maybe there was a local/regional driver that you followed?
I didn’t really follow any pro or local driver when I first started racing. I was just focused on my own program, and I was fortunate to have my Dad involved for setup help. Now that I’ve been racing for a few years, I really enjoy watching Spencer Rivkin, Broc Champlin and Michal Orlowski. Why? I’ve met them all in person and appreciate their talent and professionalism.
2. In your region you do quite a bit of racing on off-road turf. So what advice do you have for off-road dirt drivers that are trying out turf for the 1st time?
I would advise anyone interested in astroturf racing to keep an open mind. Try it for yourself before making conclusions. Outdoor astroturf racing combines elements of both dirt and carpet racing while also offering a unique racing experience. Grip varies greatly with temperature and weather. If you struggle, ask a local for some help.
3. What is your biggest win to date and why?
Probably winning the B-Main at the Cleveland Carpet Off-Road Championships to bump into the A-main. It was my first race out of my local region. I had bad luck in two of my qualifiers, and I needed a clean run to secure the bump. Thankfully I did just that.
4. In your opinion, when heading to the track what is the JConcepts product that is a must have on race day and why?
Besides the obvious necessities like tires, bodies etc. I really love my JConcepts Aluminum | Carbon Setting Board. It looks amazing and sets the foundation for my pit work area. It really is a quality piece and should last for years.
5. You are obviously highly skilled when it comes to RC cars, but what is one skill or hidden talent that folks might be surprised to find out about you?
I am quite good at many video games. I really enjoy the competitive nature of FPS games in particular.
