JConcepts 1/10th Scale Outdoor Off-Road Tire Guide

A segment of racing that is near and dear to the JConcepts crew is outdoor 1/10th scale racing. Events like the Winter Champs at Lake Park in the 90s are what shaped to a degree what JConcepts is today and kickstarted the careers of guys like Jason Ruona and Paul Wynn. While outdoor 1/10th scale racing has dwindled in favor of indoor clay surfaces, carpet, and turf. The crew has a soft spot for those tracks out there still making it happen for racers outdoors!

After events like The Hobby Haven Shootout, The Memorial Salute, and the Dad’s Series recently, we felt inspired to put this guide to paper (or blog) and provide a little more information about our options!

While we have had more success labeling some of these tires as “dirt oval” tires, JConcepts has a full line-up of outdoor 1/10th scale tires and tread patterns to get you through the most demanding of surfaces. What we will do below is highlight the 3 major pin tire options for 2wd and 4wd 1/10th scale buggy. We will start with what to use when grip is at its lowest and work up through increasing grip levels and blue grooved surfaces.

Lowest Grip Levels: The Double Dees V2

When grip is very low, the track is really wet or really dry, and no other option has any grip. The trusty Double Dees are always the ticket, and the V2 comes with added stability and traction with a taller sidewall and a little flatter profile. For 2wd, these can be paired with Double Dees V2 Fronts or even some Groovy ribbed fronts for even more neutral steering. For 4wd we typically recommend running the Double Dees in the front and rear. The Double Dees V2 are available in Green compound!

Medium Grip Levels: The Sprinter

The Sprinter has become the go-to tire for outdoor dirt oval racing and for dirt-oval spec events and with good reason. It works super well in a variety of surfaces from green tracks with no groove all the way to higher bite surfaces especially with dust. The directional side pin pattern allows racers to tune forward/side bite depending on the orientation they would like to run the tire in. Having the tire as an option in green, blue, and aqua also allows racers to make the best educated decision on what will provide the best lap times as the track may gain grip or even in some cases lose it.

Higher Grip Levels: The Rehab

Finally comes The Rehab, the Rehab is the closest you can get to running a bar tire while still having the forgiving feeling in dust of running pins. The density of the pins across the tread create a smooth consistent feeling throughout runs when grip is high but a pin tire is still needed. Much like the Sprinter, the Rehab tread pattern is available in green, blue, and aqua creating even more options for the outdoor racer!

High Grip Level, Little Dust: The Ellipse

Finally, in those rare situations outdoors where the grip is high and the dust is all gone we have our favorite indoor tire, The Ellipse. These in the right situations will always provide the quickest lap times, but the surface will require a super minimal amount of dust! The Ellipse comes in an even wider variety of compounds from Black all the way to Gold.

When conditions are at their lowest grip or loamiest we do also offer combinations such as the Double Dees V1 4wd Fronts and Rears which for 2wd can easily be paired with Rips Fronts. We also have the Goose Bumps and Flip Outs which match well with Groovy Fronts.

What tread pattern or application of an existing tread pattern would you like to see next?

  1. Would love to see DDv2 available in blue for hot summer conditions
A far better shape and pin than the Sprinter for low grip bumpy tracks

  2. We’d like to see the Rehabs available for Short Course racing, as an alternative between the Sprinters and the Ellipse.
