In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Ohio team driver, Chuck Berg!
1. We have to ask everyone this in our interviews, how did you get your start in RC racing?
Ironically I got started with RC cars while going to the drag races with my dad as a child. He raced and I played with my Radio Shack Golden Arrow in the pit area. However the day came when I broke it, and that is when the racing started for me. We went to the local hobby shop to get a car we could build together and replace parts on. Little did we know, the hobby shop was the hangout during the week for the race crowd. They had their race cars on display and just bench racing. The excitement and passion I overheard had me hooked before we got to the first local track.
2. What classes do you enjoy to compete in today? Is there another class you would like to see comeback or increase in popularity so you could compete in it as well?
My favorite class to compete in personally is 1/8 Nitro. Mainly, because there are a lot of variables that you need correct to be successful. I enjoy the various setup options, tires, and engine tuning that need to be correct. As far as a class I miss, that would be 1/10 gas truck. It offered a cheaper introduction to nitro racing for the beginner and also taught great car control. However, today’s outdoor tracks aren’t 1/10th scale oriented as it has seemed to die off over the years.
3. For 2024 what races, series, or other RC related event are you looking forward to attending and why?
The 2024 season has started out on a high for myself with the win in the 40+ and Intermediate Nitro Buggy classes at the Southern Indoor Championships. I’m looking forward to attend more of the RaceTime events throughout the year, the Mugen Challenge at LCRC Raceway, along with some regional level series and my local track, TARCAR in Toledo, OH for the Ohio State Championships.
4. In your opinion, when heading to the track what is the JConcepts product that is a must have on race day and why?
Without listing all the amazing JConcepts products, my go to must have is the awesome looking Finish Line Quick Access Nitro Pit and Charger Bag. A fresh bottle of JConcepts Medium Advanced Formulated Tire Glue, RM2 Red Hot Tire Bands, along with my favorite Green compound Reflex tires are pretty much a guaranteed bet you will instantly be on point and looking fresh!
5. Besides RC racing, what other activities do you enjoy?
Besides racing I enjoy doing anything with my nine year old daughter Lydia. From vacations, weekend getaways to Cedar Point trips. She wants to start racing as well now so I’m excited for that also.
