Last weekend Cheese City Xtreme R/C in Monroe, WI held their 2026 Team Associated Off-Road Shootout.
This event took place in their large, indoor track and the race saw 233 entries competing in 14 different classes. The classes ranged from smaller 1/16 vehicles to all the way up to the larger 1/8 cars. This was an electric only event, and not only were some modern vehicles throwing down fast laps, but two of the classes featured vintage rides as well!
It all kicked off on Friday at 10am with open practice that ran 6pm that night. Then at 6:30pm drivers could sign up for a round of seeding. In the seeding round drivers would hit the track for three minutes, and their best combined three laps would be used to determine where they started for official qualifying on Saturday. By doing this drivers would run heats with fellow racers already at the same speed as them for cleaner qualifying heats.
All the drivers were competing for hardware which was awarded to the top five finishers in each class.
For the race a fresh layout was installed. The design features a long straight in front of the driver’s stand with a small hill right before the end to help slow cars down as they took a hard right into a sweeper by the announcer’s booth.
Then there was a small straight that crossed over the timing loop, and then a driver had to take a hard right into a small chicane section.
Coming of the chicane was a short straight with a small roller that a driver could use to roll down and gain more momentum for the track’s biggest jump section.
The back corner featured this large jump that would land your car onto a large tabletop section. The bigger 1/8 Electric Buggies, Truggies and Pro4 Short Course Trucks had no issues making this jump along with the Mod 4wd Buggy class. Some of the 2WD spec class vehicles could land this jump too, but many choose to play if safe since if you did crash here it was very hard for the turn marshals to get to your car quickly.
You would then roll down off the table top and make a right to a small roller followed by another table top section.
For this section of the track if could drive your car close to the left hand side and time it right you could down side the table top and then use your momentum to leap out of the lowered section. Speaking of the lowered section, for this track design they removed the dirt completely to expose the concrete floor to mix up the track surface. For the most part unless you wrecked in those sections as long as you kept your vehicle moving forward the concrete sections wouldn’t slow you down.
After leaping out of the first concrete section you would then make a hard left in a 180 turn then head towards a small straight that was followed by a small jump with a large flat landing zone.
The mod and larger 1/8 cars could clear the dirt landing zone and plant their car in the second exposed concrete section, but most would land in the dirt before hooking a right onto the straightaway. The right hand turn right before the straight was a little tricky since it was on the concrete surface. This created an unique challenge to drivers because on the concrete your car would turn into the pipe quicker then the rest of the corners that were on dirt so you had to adjust your timing.
On Saturday the doors opened at 8am with some more open practice, then shortly before 10am a driver’s meeting was held. The race program called for three rounds of qualifying and used qual points to determine each class’s top qualifier. That meant only a driver’s best two finishes would be used to determine their overall score after qualifying was complete.
For the the 1/16 and 1/10 classes the top 8 cars were locked into the A Main from qualifying, and two more cars would join then from the lower mains for a total of 10 cars in each A Main final. In the 1/8 classes only the top 6 were locked into the big show with two more bump spots added from the alphabet lower mains.
With 33 heats in each round qualifying ran till just past 11:30pm that night. Heading into the next day the JConcepts team was able to grab 6 top qualifying positions!
Leading the charge for the team was Tekno/JConcepts driver Jared Wiggins. He would lock up the TQ in the 1/8 Electric Buggy and Truggy classes along with Mod 4wd Buggy!
His better half, and fellow JC driver, Kayty Wiggins would lock up the TQ after two rounds of qualifying in the Mini Truggy class!
Team driver Trevor “Chilly” Duncan would grab another TQ for the JConcepts team in the 13.5 Short Course Truck class!
JConcepts driver Kris Hackenson would grab the final TQ spot for the team in the Vintage 4wd Buggy class!
On Sunday the doors opened again at 8am with the lower mains kicking off at 10am. With two bump spots available in each lower main it made for some exciting racing as drivers tried to make their way to the A Main finals.
Just before 1pm the racing stopped so we could hand out the raffle prizes courtesy of the track and event sponsors. Some racers came home with some great gear once again this year!
