In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Massachusetts team driver, Matthew Sousa!
1. How did you first hear about racing RC cars? And what classes did you compete in?
I first heard about the racing side of RC when I went to a local hobby shop to fix my E-Revo, and they had just finished their indoor carpet track. I now compete in 17.5 and 13.5 Buggy. I also want to start racing Mod 2wd and 4wd Buggy. I’m just starting to get into 1/8 off-road racing and I really like it.
2. For this year, what races are you looking forward to attending and why?
I am looking forward to the US Carpet Off-Road Championships in Ohio, because I attended the race last year and I had a blast. I would also love to attend the Florida Carpet Championships, but I’m not sure if I can take that much time off of school.
3. In your region you do quite a bit of racing on off-road carpet. So what advice do you have for off-road dirt drivers that are trying out carpet for the 1st time?
If someone was trying carpet for the first time I’d recommend starting with a car that doesn’t have a lot of steering so they’re able to get used to the high grip conditions. I’d also recommend the JConcepts Pin Swag and/or the Fuzz Bite tires.
4. To date what is your favorite JConcepts product of all time and why?
My favorite JConcepts products are the Aluminum Camber and Ride Height gauges. This is a must-have tool to find a consistent setup that works good for you.
5. You are obviously highly skilled when it comes to RC cars, but what is one skill or hidden talent that folks might be surprised to find out about you?
I think people would be surprised to know that I’m pretty good at corn hole. I started playing it with my family at our campground that we’re seasonal at. I seem to win more than my parents do! 😂
