Dakotah Phend Dominates at the 2023 SIC! + Tire Guide

Over the weekend, we kicked off the 1/8 racing season at the one and only Southern Indoor Championship in Autaugaville, Alabama! This was a three-day race, jam-packed with track time, and 515 entries! The weather was  chilly, and the competition was tough! We arrived on Thursday, set up the JConcepts pits, and prepped to support our team throughout the weekend. We welcome several new faces to our team in the 1/8 scale realm. We welcomed Jared Wiggins, Joey Bourdon, Cole Kasten, and several others! Speaking of new things, we also debuted the brand-new Relapse Tire! We make the Relapse for Buggy and Truck in many different compounds! Relapses were seen all over the podium this weekend, and we’d call that a success!

The track had a good flow, and the drivers had great things to say! The temperature was cold, and the surface had grip in the groove, but the outsides were dusty. Drivers started out on Green Reflexes and moved to the Relapse as the weekend progressed. They experimented with Silver and Blue compounds as well. Ultimately, Dakotah Phend ended up Green Relapses with glued foam for the mains. Drivers also ran Bullet Wheels, the S15 Body on Buggy,  the F2 Body on Truck, and the Razor Wing! Check out Dakotah Phend’s Winning Tire Guide at the bottom of this report.

The start of the A1 race was clean, with Maifield leading the way. Maifield and Phend started to pull away. Phend was looking for a way around and Maifield was holding strong to his lines. On lap 4, Phend found a gap to squeeze into the lead. From there. Phend led the remainder of the race. Mason, Lutz, and Fuller were all in the battle for 2nd-4th. At one point, Lutz got up to 2nd, and then Fuller made the surge into 2nd. Maifield remained in 3rd, and Fuller finished A1 in 2nd. The race concluded as Phend, Fuller, Maifield, Pavidis, and Tebo.

Drivers who didn’t perform as they wanted in A1, had another shot in A2. They just needed to have faster laps and time. Maifield led the race until lap 9 where Dakotah Phend took the lead. It was a three-way battle for the lead. Phend had a bobble, and Mason Fuller grabbed onto the lead for 3 laps. Maifield wasn’t going to give up that easily, and he battled Fuller until he took the lead for the remainder of the race. The race concluded as Maifield, Fuller, Phend, Lutz, and Tebo. Overall, Phend had the faster laps and time from A1 and took the win.

Pro Nitro Buggy: Dakotah Phend (1), Ryan Maifield (2), Mason Fuller (3), Joe Bornhorst (5)

The Pro Nitro Buggy A-Main event was relatively uneventful for 1st and 2nd place. Dakotah Phend led the entire 30-minute main event with Maifield sitting in 2nd. Lutz and Setser battled in 3rd for several laps. Bornhorst put his name in the mix and worked his way up from 5th to 3rd. Lutz took it back, but Mason Fuller wanted a piece of the pie and took over 3rd. Ultimately, Lutz was able to secure 3rd and Fuller held onto 4th for the remainder of the race. Bornhorst and Setser battled in 5th for quite a while before Bornhorst was able to gain some distance. Ultimately, the race concluded with Phend, Maifield, Lutz, Fuller, and Bornhorst.

Pro Nitro Truck: Dakotah Phend (1), Joe Bornhorst (3), Mason Fuller (4)

Jared Tebo was the overall TQ. He led the race first 16 laps of the race, trying to pull away. Dakotah Phend stayed close, and when the opportunity presented itself, he passed into the lead. Once Phend took the lead Maifield and Tebo were in the battle for 2nd. Maifield was able to get close enough to Phend that when Phend went into the pit, Maifield took over the lead. Maifield pitted on the next lap, and Phend took it back. Maifield ended up having an unfortunate break and was out of the race. Phend had a substantial lead on the field after Maifield’s break. Tebo remained in 2nd. Meanwhile, from 8th on the grid, Bornhorst was climbing his way through the ranks. In the first two laps of the race, he could get around two trucks and move into 6th. From there he battled with Mason Fuller for 5th and took it over for a few laps but fell back down to 6th. Over halfway through, a few trucks got tangled up and Bornhorst was there to capitalize. He went from 6th to 3rd in a matter of seconds! He and Camden Lime were in the battle for 3rd and ultimately Bornhorst locked it down! The race concluded as Phend, Tebo, Bornhorst, Fuller, and Lime.

Overall, we are stoked about how the team kicked off 2023! Dakotah Phend won all three modified classes at The Clash of Champions and then followed it up with three pro victories at the Southern Indoor Championship! We’d also like to congratulate Patrick Rossiter on his Intermediate E-Buggy win, Phi-Long Nguyen on his E-Truck win, and Coty Ingram on his Intermediate Nitro Truck victory! We are excited to see what the rest of the year holds for the JConcepts Team! Up next, INS13 Winter Indoor Nationals at SDRC Raceway!
