Friday5 With Team Driver Rob Wheeler

In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Canada team driver, Rob Wheeler!

1. How did you first hear about racing RC cars? And what classes did you compete in?

Racing started for me in the mid 80’s once a friend of mine showed up with his own RC car. I was hooked and went to the local hobby store immediately and bought my first RC10. Local flyers at the hobby store opened me up to the local track. This led me to meeting new friends and traveling to other tracks within the area and stateside. Back then there was only 2wd and 4wd buggies. I raced my Team Associated RC10 2wd and also converted it to a monster truck for some events. Fast forward to 2012 and again based on a local hobby store, I found out about local tracks to race at. These are the foundation to keep racing alive and well. I’ve raced everything from 1/10th 2wd/4wd buggies, stadium trucks and 2wd/4wd short course trucks, 1/8th ebuggy/etruggy, 1/12th pan car as well as 4wd touring cars.

2. What class do you prefer to compete in today, and why?

Currently I’m focused on 2wd/4wd buggies as they are the most popular 1/10th scale classes. I’ve raced both stock and mod for both. These classes help to teach you drive control and consistency. I’m looking to explore 1/8th ebuggy again as well to add to my outdoor summer season as there is a strong following for that as well. 1/8th scale attracts competitive racing, race strategy as well as many social aspects of the sport/hobby.

3. In your opinion, what classes have you noticed that seem to be in a decline? And how would you try to resolve this so there is more participation?

I’ve noticed a decline in 1/10th scale outdoor season due to local tracks closing due to the pandemic. We need to have more incentives to support these tracks to survive and bring new racers into this great hobby of ours. 4wd short course has declined over the years, this is a good starting point for new racers to learn how to drive. They can move to other classes as they improve their skills. Novice classes, driving clinics, arrive and drive or bring a friend to the track could help bring new racers to the track to improve racer participation.

4. Which JConcepts product, in your opinion, is a must-have on race day when going to the track and why?

Starting with JConcepts tires and wheels is an excellent starting point. These products will provide you with the traction you need to stay in control and improve your lap times. JConcepts bodies and wings provide you with a sleek and stylish look that is durable, aerodynamic that have been designed for many different styles of track conditions. JConcepts aluminum accessories are definite good upgrades to add to your cars to make them look great and clean.

5. Name one thing people might be surprised to know about you.

I recently enrolled in night school for university degree completion of my studies. Work, school and RC life balance is a great challenge. All will have great rewards when you put the effort into it.
