Friday5 With Team Driver Heath Lawson

In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Oklahoma team driver, Heath Lawson!

1. How did you first hear about racing RC cars? And what classes did you compete in?

I have to give credit on this one to an Oklahoma RC legend, Sonny Nave. He was friends with my parents and he told them about it. So one Saturday we went and watched him race, and soon after decided it was something we wanted to do. So my parents took me to Competition RC in Oklahoma City and bought me my first setup, a Team Associated TC3 touring car. I started racing 27 turn touring car back in 2000, and 23 years later I still can’t put the controller down, and touring car is still my favorite class to race. Thanks Mom and Dad!

2. If you have been racing for awhile, what would you say is the number one technology advancement in RC to date and why?

I would say the best advancement over the years has to be tire patterns and compounds. That has really made cars faster and easier to drive with a near perfect tire option for every condition. I’m extremely lucky to represent a company that offers the absolute best. I can honestly say I have only had that luxury with JConcepts.

3. Dirt Oval has really grown in popularity over the past few years. In your opinion what is the main cause of this increase of left turn drivers?

I think the reason oval racing has become popular is because there is a class for every skill level, and you can get started relatively cheap. You don’t have to have the best car or the perfect setup to go out and have fun in the entry level classes. If you choose to get serious, there are classes for that also. It can be as easy or complicated as you want to make it. So it is perfect for beginners and seasoned racers.

4. JConcepts is well known for its tires and bodies, but in your opinion what tool or accessory is a must have on race day that other drivers might overlook?

My favorite tool that is overlooked is the Aluminum | Carbon Setting Board. Setup boards are popular in on-road racing, but also extremely useful in the off-road world. It makes it way easier to get your setup perfect everytime, and mentally knowing the setup is perfect is a huge plus also.

5. Name one thing people might be surprised to know about you.

Most people would probably be surprised to know that my other hobby is bowling.
