In this edition of the JConcepts Friday5 we talk to Illinois team driver, Ryan Mcclain!
1. How did you first hear about racing RC cars? And what classes did you compete in?
With a MX racing background, I’ve always seen guys in the pits with different RC cars and heard them talk about racing. Once I hung the boots up, I needed something to occupy my free time so I started researching off-road RC racing. It’s as close to MX racing as you can get and also doesn’t hurt as much when you crash. I started out racing the Stadium Truck class, which quickly went to 4wd Buggy and then all the nitro classes.
2. Name a RC class that you would like to see increase in popularity and why?
I would really like to see the Stadium Truck class grow again. Not just because that’s what I started in, but it has always seemed to be one of the most enjoyable classes. Everyone comes off the track laughing and having a good time.
3. What is your biggest win to date and why?
My biggest race victory is actually not a win at all but two podiums and another top ten at AMS two years ago. That race gave me confidence moving forward that I could not only push harder, but run with much faster, more experienced racers. Even more than the confidence, the amount of people that had a helping hand in me finishing all my races was a real eye opener. I’ll never forget everyone that made it possible!
4. When it comes to new products released from JConcepts, what are you most excited to see and why? Is it a new body, new tire, new accessory, etc.?
This would normally be an easy answer with being excited about new tires; we’ve seen some great ones the past few years. I’m actually most excited for the new truggy bodies to come out. With being a huge truggy fan and all the banter back and forth, seeing a new truggy product is awesome.
5. You are obviously highly skilled when it comes to RC cars, but what is one skill or hidden talent that folks might be surprised to find out about you?
Being that I’m 6’8 it might not be to surprising but I’m very talented at getting cats out of trees, as well as getting macaroni off the top shelf when someone is in need.
